Jim Wilke is the host of Jazz NW and Jazz After Hours. Both shows are heard weekly on KPLU.
Jazz Northwest focuses on the regional jazz scene from Portland to Vancouver. CDs by the best resident musicians from Seattle, Portland and Vancouver are featured, and the program also includes news about the best places to go for live jazz in the region. In addition, Jim goes "on location" to concerts, clubs and jazz festivals to record performances by resident and visiting artists for playback on Jazz Northwest. These one-of-a-kind recordings are available nowhere else!
Host Jim Wilke is a professional recording engineer and writer in addition to his radio programs which include "Jazz After Hours" on Public Radio International, heard nationwide since 1984.
Coming up on Jazz Northwest:
JazzED New Works Ensemble next on Jazz NW on 88.5 KPLU, Sunday April 22 at 1 PM (PDT)
The New Works Ensemble is one of five jazz ensembles operated by Seattle JazzED to provide jazz education for students who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to study and play jazz. The groups range from introductory, through beginning and intermediate to advanced plus The New Works Ensemble which plays mostly original music, much of it composed by Wayne Horvitz, who directs the ensemble.
The New Works Ensemble's music is challenging for the young musicians because much of it is unconventional and not available for study on recordings. Instruments not frequently encountered in jazz also find a place in this group because composer Wayne Horvitz will compose parts for them.
For this Art of Jazz concert The New Works Ensemble was joined by the internationally renown Dutch trombonist Wolter Wierbos who was in Seattle for several concerts and a workshop earlier this month. His expressive, articulate and frequently witty sound adds another dimension to this JazzED New Works concert.
The Art of Jazz series at the Seattle Art Museum is presented by Earshot Jazz on the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. The next concert in the series will be The Lary Barilleau Latin Jazz Collective on May 10.
Jazz Northwest is recorded and produced by Jim Wilke exclusively for 88.5 KPLU. The program is heard each Sunday afternoon at 1 PM (PDT), and a podcast is available after the broadcast from kplu.org.
